I don't recommend X99. If you really want to make the leap and the major investment in time and effort the steep learning curve takes, then follow (copy) a successful X99 User Build. You could copy this build by rbbunmc and install Yosemite.

If you read through the whole build guide and find it is way too complex for what you are ready for, then go with a Z170/6700K system. Otherwise you may as well skip the OS X install and just start with Windows first. Then hope for X99 support from Apple.
