I finally got around to buying a wifi/bluetooth card that's natively supported in macOS Catalina. It's a BCM94360CS2 device that includes a PCI-e adaptor+antennae and cables all for $32.98. (I paid $30.98 but the price went up in a week.)
Installation was simple: plug everything in and make sure to connect the USB 2.0 cable. Everything worked out-of-box. Only Handoff required me to logout of iCloud and log back in.
