Almost a year after the initial release of Windows 8, the next big update Windows 8.1 should be available starting October 18th. There has been a preview version which is still available for free to try out which features some new improvements to IE 11, built-in apps, improved Windows store experience, and cloud connectivity with SkyDrive. It will be available worldwide as a free update to existing Windows 8 users.

Does it have an option to default boot to the desktop instead of the Metro interface in the new version? I tried the trial version of Win8.0 and did not like the interface.

I tried the 8.1 preview and didn't see that but then again, I didn't look. If you run 2 displays, the first display will show metro and the 2nd a desktop view.

Same nasty interface with a fake start button...
