The installer will only let me install to my startup SSD - I have noticed this with iLife too. What is up with this particular feature of os x? Is there a workaround for this?

Applications are installed to the applications folder which resides as a main folder on the same drive that the OS resides on.

Additionally, application support folders/files/caches, etc., are stored on this drive as well. Folks may know of a way around it, I don't know personally. But that's why you typically have to install software to the same drive the OS is installed on.

It gives you options in case you have multiple drives you can boot from with a copy of the OS installed so you could optionally install it to those as well.

Hope that helps answering it.
