The title tells most of the story. I've currently got on-board HDMI and DVI (via HD 3000), but I'm considering upgrading to a 27" Cinema Display. However, I'm not ready to rebuild my machine just yet so I figured just dropping a cheap discrete video card in their would work for now. Any help would be appreciated. My requirements are:

1.) As cheap as possible (not a gamer)
2.) Supports full resolution of Apple 27" Cinema Display
3.) Natively compatible
4.) Has mini DisplayPort

I don't need any bells and whistles (unless someone can explain to me otherwise why that would be beneficial). I'm just looking for the cheapest, bare-minimum solution to get me into the DisplayPort game. I'll probably do a full overhaul in a year or two when Thunderbolt prices come down.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Also, my current profile is Early 2008 Mac Pro. If I'm moving to Display port, should I be considering changing that or can I leave it where it is?

Thanks for the quick reply! Hmmm... Well it's more expensive than I was hoping for, but it may still beat the alternative.

Since I won't technically need one until I can acquire a compatible monitor, I suppose I will hold off. By that time, I can either pick up a discrete video card or perhaps a viable motherboard option will have come into the picture. Gigabyte is releasing an mATX board with dual Thunderbolt called the GA-Z77MX-D3H TH, but pricing for it hasn't come out yet. The specs are here:

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1155 - GA-Z77MX-D3H TH (rev. 1.0)

Even if a new Thunderbolt motherboard is more expensive than discrete video, it might be worth it... assuming I can still run a standard mini DisplayPort monitor from the Thunderbolt connection. I know it's a viable option for real Macs so I would expect the same here.

I wouldn't recommend it because has unsupported audio.

BUMMER!! Good catch...
