What is the safest method of updating?

Hi,

I updated my Hackintosh a while ago and it was rendered useless. Luckily I had a back up, but it was annoying to get back up running.

I've searched a few times, but I was wondering if there was a simple guide for updating so that there aren't any problems. I'm honestly not as fluent as most of the users here, and I find some of the guides here very confusing.

Need more specific information. Updating to what from what?

Software. For example, I'm currently on 10.10.2 and I'd like to update to 10.10.5

Same here. I let my hackintosh with 10.10.2, and now have a couple updates that require 10.10.3.. So it would be good to go straight to 10.10.5
