What is the hackintoshability of ZBOX EN760

Status
Not open for further replies.
In your honor, F4OR:

First of all sorry for not finishing this status report and/or guide earlier (I have been running my machine for a couple of weeks now as my main media center).

What I have fixed since last:

* Audio
- Got it to work with either the 3.5 mm output or HDMI output. Could not get both to work at the same time.
How: Got a working kext from an open source repository that installs the correct driver based on automatic detection. By letting it auto detect I got the 3.5mm audio port working, however I wanted HDMI Audio so after specifying different versions I finally found one that enabled HDMI Audio. (Don't really remember which one but the GitHub repo is where I got the working kext)

- You should really make a backup of the real AppleHDA kexts since they are used by the script in the repo to create the realtek audio kext.

https://github.com/toleda/audio_RealtekALC

* Ethernet
- Wired ethernet is working fine, both ports are showing up and works as expected.
How: After finding out the name of the network adapter (looking at the windows installer files for the card) it was not so hard. The device is working fine with the kext RealtekRTL8111 which can be found in Multibeast under network>realtek.

* NVRam
- Since PCs does not have this extra storage module I'm storing the contents of the NVRam settings to a file on shutdown and restoring on start up. I had to fix this for Parallels 10 to let me run another OS X instance as a virtual machine (Running windows or linux works fine without NVRam access)
How: http://www.idelta.info/archives/nvram_on_hackintosh/

* Power management
- Not sure I did this correctly but Intel Power Management app is reporting Ampere, Frequency and Watt status for the CPU in real time.
How: Generated a DSDT file using "DPCIManager" and added that to the /Extra/ folder. The file will be called DSDT.aml. Then I googled for intel Power Gadget and downloaded the osx installer. You can find it here: https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/intel-power-gadget-20

A very useful tool for me have been the DPCIManager, it finds a bunch of devices in your computer (even if you do not always have the drivers) and helps you know what kext or key word to google for.

Another side note, I get kernel panics some times when booting my computer, I have no idea why but haven't really though that much about it since I can just reboot it again and then it works perfectly. I have only had the kernel panic issue in the booting process. Once I'm in OS X it works flawlessly, the machine is quiet and cool all the time and performs way better than my mac mini ;-)

Happy hacking :D

For reference, here is a list of all my currently loaded kexts:

Hey Sunblade!
Sorry for the late reply, went out of town for a little holiday vacation.

This guide probably took a while to make, so I really appreciate the time and effort you spent into it :) I'll make sure to treat it like the bible.

Ethernet ports all show up, Power Management seems fine (based on the intel power gadget), and HDMI audio works (After thousands of pained attempts).
The NVRam guide seems to not work, but besides that, it is mostly functional. :mrgreen:

Again, thank you. I probably wouldn't have made it this far without your awesome guide :D:D:D

Well I'm glad I could help and it was fun proving to everyone that the EN760 actually is very compatible with OSX. Hope you have a great holiday vacation and I wish you a happy new year (especially with your new fun hackintosh)!

PS. If you find a way to make the WiFi/Bluetooth work, please post back any time :)

Thanks Sunblade for saving me the time of scouring the net for roper kexts and mods in order to get OS X installed on this particular machine. I do not have my ZBOX yet but will be getting it soon and pairing it with the Broadcom BCM4352 802.11ac card since its been running really well in my iMac for the past six months thanks to insanelymac and OSXLatitude. Oh by the way, an alternative suggestion for NVRam workaround would be to install and use the Clover bootloader instead of Chimera or Chameleon. If you have a properly generated MLB, ROM and Serial then everything would be functional and recognized by Apple to use their services such as FaceTime and iMessages. I had switched my main rig a Lenovo M91P and an i5 NUC that were running Chameleon to Clover in order to get these two services working again.

Hopefully, when my hardware arrives, my install will go well. Thanks again for the guide!

@Sunblade & F4OR - I managed to install clover and Yosemite onto the EN760 using some of the info supplied from you on the EN760 thread. Everything is working perfectly without a DSDT and I have one problem with the system. The EN760 is not showing any video output over HDMI to my monitor unless I boot with the flag, nv_disable=1. Have you been able to get the HDMI working? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and I would be glad to shared my files with you if you needed them.

Current system;
Zotac EN760 connected via DVI
Clover 3156 installed in EFI on Samsung 128SSD mSata
Yosemite 10.10.2
8GB RAM
500GB Sata HDD

Hello mrintegra!

Yes I have HDMI output, it works fine with both DVI and HDMI. They are both auto detected whenever I connect a display to either of the ports. No reboot required and I am using the Nvidia drivers. However I had to do some modding of the audio kexts to get sound over HDMI but I did that after being able to get full resolution image with acceleration over HDMI.

Not sure how to help you in this case. Im running an older version of OSX Yosemite because I´m afraid of all the work I might have to do to get it working again if I update :p

Holy cow you responded...haha. I'm not sure what the deal is then with my unit. I have everything(sleep, speedstep and etc) working perfectly fine with the one exception of the HMDI. Every time I try to boot from the HDMI, I get a black screen. However, the computer is still running since I can VNC into it but it's a bit sluggish since for some odd reason the QE/CI is disable. Any chance you can advise which version for the Chameleon/ Chimera was used and include your plist for the bootloader as well as the smbios.plist (with all the sensitive info removed)? Almost forgot to ask if you can also post pictures of your BIOS settings. My HDMI works with Windows but I just cannot figure out with why it will not work with OS X even with different Product Names in the SMBios.

It's a lot to ask but I appreciate all the help. Thanks in advance.

It's a lot to ask but I appreciate all the help. Thanks in advance.

Hello mrintegra!

Sorry for the late reply, I have to say that Im getting more and more tempted to update my machine to 10.10.4 or even the new El Capitan. Apparently Apple has fiddled around with bluetooth functionality across different versions of Yosemite and I would like to get a more stable version on my hands.

Another thing that have been lurking up on my system is that any type of SMB or AFP file sharing activity disables my ethernet. I have to manually walk over to the computer and pull out and insert the ethernet cable to get network access back.

What I want to say with this is that Im interested to see you succeed with your machine so I can update mine as well. I have attached my whole Extras folder here, I hope you have some use for it. It contains my SMBios and chameleon config.

@mrintegra

I have rebooted my machine now (rarely do so, had an uptime of > 100 days :p) and captured some photos of my bios settings and chameleon boot screen including version number in the top left corner.

Sunblade - No worries, on the delay. I haven't had much time to check the forum. Been preoccupied with work and chasing after my two kids. Thanks a whole lot for taking the time to snap all those screenshots so I can use it to compare my BIOS. When the final version of El Capitan, I will definitely update. Don't foresee any problems with this major upgrade since I haven't had any troubles updating from 10.10.3 to 10.10.5 using the Clover bootloader.

When I have time within the next week or so, I will post up a zipped DMG file of my EFI partition. Hopefully, someone else with the same system as ours will find it useful.

Regards,
mrintegra
