I do this
http://www.jfskc.org/computersupport/volunteering
so im trying to learn more about the mac os to better support it.
I was thinking about getting an i3 or i5 laptop.
I could get a old MacBook But I don't think that would be a good value.
I would even be ok with buying mac os and running it in vb but I'm all amd so that's not possible.

Im looking for a laptop but from what I read I may need to change some stuff out.
That's doable for me I don't mind doing anything like that.

Can you make any suggestions where to start.
thanks for your time

The easiest way to begin learning the Mac OS is to buy a Mac Mini (refurb from Apple is fine)
Just plug it in and boot up and everything works. I think they go for about $549 right now
at Apple's website. A Mac mini is exactly the same components as a laptop, just without the
screen and keyboard. I'm sure you've got a PC monitor and keyboard/mouse you could use.

Use any LCD monitor with a DVI connection and get started learning the World's best OS :!:

At that price point I would most likely just Buy a Mac book air for $. Or just build a cheap i3 micro atx box. But I will keep you suggestion in mind thanks.
