Weird cd/dvd drive problem

Hi all
My main hac has recently developed a weird problem with the cd/dvd drive.

Basically every time I reboot the drive whirs and tries to open and close constantly, until osx (10.13.6) boots and the cd/dvd drive sits open.

If I try and close it manually osx crashes.

I have a double boot on here through clover to an old copy of Windows 7 and the cd/dvd drive works fine on there.

On top of all this it worked great in osx until recently, which makes me think some software or process is causing this behaviour.

The drive is recognised in both osx and windows as an ATAPI iHAS124 W with firmware HLOG

Any thoughts or suggestions please?
