I have an ancient p7p55d board with no onboard usb 3.0 support and I'd like to add it. I'm currently running 10.8.2. What are some recommended USB 3.0 cards I can get that doesn't take too much work to get going?

Anything with a NEC/Renesas chip should work, though I don't know if the Universal USB 3.0 driver (GenericUSBXHCI.kext) that's in MultiBeast will work with 10.8.2 or not (it might require 10.8.3). I just ordered this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00965J5UG for $12.99, for my partner's hack which doesn't have USB 3.0 on the motherboard, I'm pretty sure it will work fine.

Thanks for the reply. Turns out I'm only on 10.8, is that gonna be a problem?

That card has really low ratings, kinds of scary. If any card with NEC/Renesasa chip will work, perhaps this one? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008AJMNKI

or maybe I'll find another Syba with higher rating.

That's strange, it got pretty good ratings on Newegg. The one you pointed to should work fine, though again I don't know for certain whether the new driver will work with 10.8.x where x < 3.

I trust the reviews on newegg more. I'll pick up the one you recommended. Can you point me to the drivers?

The kext is "Universal USB 3.0" in MultiBeast 5.3.1. That's why I'm not sure if it will work with earlier versions of ML or not.

I'll find out and report back.

Worked like a charm! At first it wouldn't power up my external USB 3.0 drive, but then I realized I forgot to plug in the power. Testing some 1.7GB file, it took roughly 10 seconds to copy to my SSD from the external HDD. Thanks a lot for the suggestion!
