Back again! I've been relatively successful so far, however, it's stuck at the 'about a second remaining' part of the installation, and has been for a good 15-20 minutes. Is this normal, and should I leave it be?

That part takes a while (around 20 mins, maybe longer). It depends on how slow your USB is. The installer is verifying the installer image against what was transferred to the HDD.

It is covered in post #2 of the guide.

"OS X could not be installed on your computer"
"An error occurred while extracting files from the package "Essentials.pkg"."

From where did you download Yosemite?
On what hardware did you create the USB?
Did you use the createinstallmedia method?

I'm using El Capitan
I created it on this same laptop (virtual machine, just swapped hdd)
Yes, that method

There's your problem ^^^

Do not use a VM. They are known to create incorrect USB sticks...

Use real hardware.

It's worked for me in the past. Ah well, looks like it's over for me then, cheers for the help

Borrow a Mac from someone you know, or purchase Snow Leopard and install it first (iBoot Ivy).
