Thunderbolt requires restart for any device

Hey,
I have a GA-Z77X-UP4 with an i7 3770

I want to use the Onboard Thunderbolt to drive my Universal Audio Apollo Duo.
I started by trying to connect an external Thunderbolt Hard drive, and it only mounted the hard drive or recognized the hardware after a full reboot.

Is that expected behavior? Is there any way to get a "hot plug" behavior for TB ?

No hotplug for thunderbolt devices. Support not expected either. Boot with equipment connected for hardware recognition. Loads of threads on TH support using the search facility.

I actually did search but only found posts a couple of months old, so I though perhaps things have changed.

Except for the fact there's not hotplug functionality, the connectivity itself should be fully functioning, correct?
