hi
been reading about this hack with mac pro 5.1 - does this mean machines like my x79 can run this card with appropriate mods?
i read a lot of talk but not much success being reported
I'm not 100% sure but I think the onboard TB header on recent TB3 compatible motherboards is only used to pass though the GPU so that it can be output via TB3 connection.
You can not use a TB3 add in PCIe card if your motherboard does not support it in the BIOS as there will be no ACPI tables injected.
I've read a report out there that someone got their Titan Ridge TB add-in card to work by shorting two pins on the GPIO connector.
edited to add: the label GPIO gives a hint that it's some sort of slow speed I/O. I found a reference that it's used for the security features, so if you turn off Thunderbolt security then it would be unneeded. The motherboard still has to support Thunderbolt, though.
