Hi,

Aussie prospective Hackintosh user here, researching and prepping for a workstation build
of a machine w 2 bootable system drives (Sierra and Mojave).

Primary purposes: Video editing with FCPX, sound production with Pro Tools.
Required connectivity: Thunderbolt 2, USB 3

I have posted a general build query w more details specs under "buying advice".

For this post:

I note that the ASRock Z390 (my board of choice at this stage) has one Thunderbolt 3 port.
How does one get equipped with Thunderbolt 2 connectivity? ie 2 ports needed...

Thanks...

Do you actually need two ports? The Thunderbolt 3 port on the Asrock should be totally backwards compatible and you should be able to just daisy chain your devices, up to 6 i believe. The only caveat with the port on the Asrock is it's 20gbps instead of 40, but to be honest, that is still a stupidly large amount of bandwidth and unlikely ever to be saturated.

It's a great board btw and mine is running very nicely indeed.

@stripealipe thanks for replying - as I run an external HD via TB2 at same time as my audio interface (also TB2) that's a practical necessity, but if using some sort of TB hub is a solution, that could solve the issue? I am aware TB is a delicate thing to get right with Hackintosh builds. I also don't want to compromise speed of transfer but this shouldn't be too much of a prob for audio. I wonder about FCPX though as I also need to have my HD and audio interface running for that as well...and that does need best speed of transfer... happy to be schooled here!

Not all TB3 ports are compatible with TB2. The newer Intel TB3 chips (Titan Ridge) do not appear to be backwards compatible, but the previous version (Alpine Ridge) does. I have 2 ASRock add in TB3 cards, with Apline Ridge chips, running an Apple Thunderbolt monitor from two different Linux boxes (hopefully one will soon be a Hackintosh). I should add that I had to add a Radeon RX 580 Pulse to supply video to the displayport input on the ASRock TB3 card.

Hello friend, are you plug into Asrock Z390 Phantom Gaming ITX/ac Apple Thunterbolt display under Windows 10? I bought Asrock Z390 Phantom Gaming ITX/ac + Apple Thunterbolt Display A1407 with original and Startech TB3 to TB2 adapter. When I connect display into board, I get Thunterbolt software notification, selected Always connect, but display wasn’t power up. I can see only Apple Thunterbolt display in list Port1 with status not connected. I try all version BIOS, all version drivers and different OS. Current config same as your Bios, 4.40, drivers from official site , Primary graphics -onboard, multi monitor enable. I don’t have PCI express graphics. Before I bought Asrock Z490 TB3, Titan ridge isn’t compatible with Apple monitors. Are you have any idea? Thank you for your attention.

I have a Titian Ridge Card and my TB2 Hard drives work just fine with the Apple adapter.

The Apple Thunderbolt Display will work with GC-Titian Ridge with Modified firmware and flashed with an external flashing device.

You need to enable Thunderbolt Bus to get the Thunderbolt Display to work. I am not sure how to do that with an Onboard Asrock Alpine ridge controller.
