Hello @pastrychef

I am making a post as suggested that I do

System Freezes; Screens go to one black one white/gray. This has been on on going issue for me for a while and it seems to happen the most when playing world of warcraft, using iTunes for music/movies. I find that If I have a bunch of finder displaying folder directory the crashes seem to happen more often. Right now I am running a modified version of your EFI it is attached below so far today I have not had any crashes. I will keep you posted about any future crashes that I feel are related to this issue. I do appreciate all of your help and desire to help people fix their issues. I can also tell you that now that I am using 18,3 that I can not use preview again however, I would trade preview for no crashes. I also saw in the no preview thread that you could edit some file to tell it to work.

I think that isolating and fixing the freezes should take priority over fixing Quick Look. We can try to address Quick Look after getting the system to run stably.

Edit:
Is your IGPU enabled in BIOS?

Things to do after you've confirmed your system is stable:
Without WhateverGreen, you should probably enable the PEGP to GFX0 rename.
Try running VDADecoderChecker.

No I do not have IGPU enabled mostly because it breaks my ability to watch movies in iTunes. I think with the Mac Pro 6,1 SM I could have the IGPU enabled and it did not break iTunes.

I will enabled PEGP to GFX0. (what does this do?)

Says acceleration is fully supported.

Personally, I think iMacPro1,1 is a closer match than MacPro6,1

PEGP to GFX0 renames the GPU to what macOS expects it to be.

Fully supported is good. That's what we want.

How has stability been?

I do not fully understand what exactly the SM does however, It does make preview work, it does make all DP ports work without WG and Lilu. I figured at least 6,1 had ATI cards that was really my reasoning for selecting it in the first place but the other Mac pros sm also seem to make preview and all the DP work without WG. Preview would be a small price to pay to do away with the crashes. I do agree that the I7 8700 and Xeon W are basically the same and along with the Vega card our systems are much closer to iMac Pro, however that SM did not give me two display ports without WG. I guess I might not get to have my cake and eat it too.

Does it expect it to be GFX0 in iMac only? or would it expect it to be GFX0 in older Mac Pro?

Stability today has been good at least for the time that I was sitting here using it, I left the stuff that normally crashes the computer open and active all day with no incident. I did have like two weeks of no crashes on 6,1 with I think Beta 6 or 7 of Mojave then I did an update and the problem returned.

As itwas stated, use the renaming to match the system definition you ultimately end up using.

This post has more listings of renames necessary for other system definitions.

Sounds good. Hopefully, all of this has solved your issues.

MacPro6,1 do not use the graphics device name GFX0, the device name is GFX2
According to pastrychef's link it should be GFX1 and I would guess that they are both semi right since the MacPro 6,1 had dual video cards. However, I do not quite understand how to make that as such either way.

Yea I think all that stuff is kind of over my head, I mean I read it and I understand what they are implying. Just feel like my head is going to explode when I read it.

The biggest reason I lean towards Mac Pro 6,1 is having dual display ports without lilu and WG and when using one DP and one HDMI the color difference is noticeable and kind of messes with my eyes. I have locked the DP to RGB mode but it does not help the screens still look different. I guess if everything remains stable next few days I could put WG and Lilu back and and see if it remains as such.

I think it's related to HEVC acceleration. I had similar problems with High Sierra when exporting videos and using some Apple apps.

Use iMac18,3 as SMBIOS, install latest Lilu and WhatEvergreen kexts and enable iGPU in your BIOS.
Delete every patch related to GPUs on your Clover config (PEGP, HDAS, GFX0, IGPU, etc) and use ONLY what you need.

If you will be using MacPro6,1, you can do the rename in config.plist > ACPI > DSDT with:
Comment: change PEGP to GFX1
Find: 50454750
Replace: 47465831
