Unfortunately the fix suggested in that thread (remove timeout from boot.plist) didn't work - though I found sleeps work perfectly in safe mode.

Its really annoying, as everything else works perfectly!

If it works in safe mode then it could be graphics card related. There is an app called 'Please Sleep' that people were using about a year or two ago to make their computers sleep. I would look into that. Suggest that you search the 780/780Ti threads for information regarding others experience with sleep using the same GPU. See if there is or is not a pattern.
