What u need to do is make your chameleon boot plist like mine, or use chameleon wizard. Its very important to use GE=enabler either yes or no, Duckwood for buffer for 6870, and for ati ports the number of displays your graphic card supports. ITS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT to put the same device ID. With this I am able to use both my HD4000 and my 6870 with a dual monitor setup.

One thing I did overlook is I have a xfx 6870 1gb and you have a Sapphire. would the device id change or remain the same?

It dosent matter it should be a general fix

Ok got it to work but I noticed that my card now says Ati radeon 6xxx hd. Did you get that to work or show up as the right card? Also, I have noticed that once I changed the hd 4000 to primary graphics, the start up is weird. I have an ACD hook to my hd6870 and nothing attached to the board. It wont show me the apple logo, its boots straight to the login screen. Any thoughts? I know why its doing it but I wonder if I change the primary graphics to pcie would it still work.

Yes my card shows up like that too, but it has complete graphics acceleration(you can test this by opening chess, if you can hold the pieces and move them around quartzextreme is working, also if expose works then its working as well.

It really dosent bother me since Im getting 110 fps in sc2 at extreme settings. Whats happening is that in order for your internal graphics to be used is that your forcing it to be detected. You can remove this setting, but you will have to have both monitors turned on at startup.

The apple logo shows up on your "primary monitor" which we determined was the monitor conected to HD4000, but once you arrive to mac os x it remembers your settings which was to have your XFX 6870 as your primary monitor. That way you have both graphics card working, you can check the performance in games.

With Ge=yes i was getting 40fps in sc2, but with this im getting 110 fps. If its really bothering you that it says 6xxx, you can always try this:

I really didnt want to reinstall mac os x, but you can try it out and tell me if it worked for you without the hotfix.

Radeon HD 6000 series card to work in Mountain Lion (when it worked great in Lion), I decided to make this guide.

Credits: Haysphere

Part 1: Setting up the UniBeast Drive
1. Insert your UniBeast Flash Drive into a working Mac. Maybe your MacBook Pro, working Lion installation, etc.
2. Run this command in terminal to unhide files "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1" (copy and paste that into terminal and hit enter)
3. Force Finder to quit. You can do this in activity monitor. It will automatically restart.
4. Open Finder and navigate to your UniBeast Drive
5. Navigate to System/Library/Extensions
6. MAKE A BACKUP OF the kext "ATI6000Controller.kext" and then DELETE it.

Part 2: Booting from your UniBeast Drive
1. Boot from your UniBeast drive like you usually would. Use the command "GraphicsEnabler=No" in order to boot into Mountain Lion Installer
2. Install Mountain Lion as you usually would
3. After installation, bootup Mountain Lion by booting into your flash drive and then booting into ML, using the command "GraphicsEnabler=No"
4. Copy the ATI6000Controller.kext kext to your new desktop
5. Run KextBeast (Download: http://www.tonymacx86.com/downloads.php?do=cat&id=3)
6. Reboot

Now your graphics should work. I have two monitors (Apple Cinema Display and another 25" 1080p monitor) running with full graphics acceleration Very fast and no lag!

For those wondering, I fixed my machine in my sig by replacing the parts with the exact same things. Not everything blew. I now run a surge protector on my phone line and computer.

You're welcome!

Remember that this hot fix is for using both the internal and external graphics, try the above if your only going to use one monitor. Since I have my 55 inch tv and my 24 inch monitor connected at the same time this is what works for me.

You could also try this, this is my current setup:
sudo perl -pi -e 's|\x00\x04\x00\x00\x04\x03\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x0 0\x12\x04\x05\x01\x00\x04\x00\x00\x04\x03\x00\x00\ x00\x01\x00\x00\x22\x05\x04\x02\x00\x08\x00\x00\x0 4\x02\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x11\x02\x06\x04\x00\ x02\x00\x00\x14\x02\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x00\x0 0\x03\x05\x04\x00\x00\x00\x04\x02\x00\x00\x00\x01\ x00\x00\x11\x02\x01\x03|\x00\x04\x00\x00\x04\x03\x 00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x12\x04\x04\x01\x00\x04\x00 \x00\x04\x03\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x22\x05\x05\x 02\x00\x08\x00\x00\x04\x02\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00 \x11\x02\x06\x04\x00\x02\x00\x00\x14\x02\x00\x00\x 00\x01\x00\x00\x00\x00\x03\x05\x04\x00\x00\x00\x04 \x02\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x11\x02\x01\x06|g' /System/Library/Extensions/ATI6000Controller.kext/Contents/MacOS/AMD6000Controller

Yes -- that's all one line.. make sure when you copy and paste it into terminal, that it's one line. You'll need to enter your password after hitting return.

next, type:
sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions

next, type:
sudo kextcache -system-caches

Finally, edit your org.chameleon.Boot.plist file once again, and add the following:
<key>AtiConfig</key>
<string>Gibba</string>
<key>AtiPorts</key>
<string>5</string>

Save and reboot.

Dude, I just want to THANK you! Followed exactly your advise, as I'm having the same hardware, and everything went perfect. GPU recognized, sound is working. After a few days spent trying to get the thing working, you practically saved my life. Thanks a lot !!

Youre welcome! I recomend you use the last post to fix your graphics card. You should check which framebuffer works best for you. The Sapphire Hd 6870 work really well with duckwood instead of Gibba, and the ati ports 4 instead of 5. You should only use gibba if you have the XFX 6870 because it has 5 ports, other than duckwood should be enough. Try each one and see what works best for you. I also recommend installing multibeast's 5.1 hw monitor.

I followed these directions and it resolved my mouse lag etc, however I lost the ability to use the volume up/down/mute keys as well as sleep keys on my HP Wireless Elite Keyboard. these worked perfectly until I made this change. Booting into OSX 10.6.8 and these keys still work. What could have caused this? any idea how to fix?

Disregard, this was an issue with USB overdrive. I uninstalled it but noticed the pref pane was still in preferences. I did a reinstall/uninstall, deleted pref pane and rebooted, issue resolved. New 6870 seems to be working well, in benchmarks and in Arkham Asylum. Everything working well with Logitech f710 controller, not sure what i would do without this site!
