i formatted a spare HD (GPT) and cloned my El Capitan partition to it. then i copied /EFI from the efi partition on the working disk to the efi partition on the spare disk. then i downloaded the latest Clover (3773) and updated clover on the spare disk. i then unplugged the original disk, booted El Capitan from the spare disk, and downloaded Sierra from the app store.

then from the applications folder i ran Install macOS Sierra. it requested a couple of restarts but it was uneventful. for some reason, an install over a running OS takes significantly longer than a fresh install, but so be it.

after the final reboot, i used Toleda's excellent script to patch AppleHDA for Sierra and now everything is working properly. certainly, at least in my case, this was LOTS easier than a clean install and then having to reinstall lots of apps.
