Thanks To Gordo74, Stork and Tony to let my first rig come alive smoothly
Hi, I'm a mac user looking for a new machine as my 2009 MacBook Pro is getting oldie, but my pocket wouldn't allow a new MacPro. It's been some time I've been reading about the Hackintosh option and, after digging into Tony's Sandy Bridge custom builds, i realized the time was come.
So here is my first rig, I build it keeping space and silence in mind, that's why the microATX, even if the Fractal Design case i bought it's not so small.. I love it aniway as it's really good designed and well manufactured. The system has 4 fans - one on the front, one on the back, the PSU fan and the CPU cooler fan. I'm not using any graphic card, so everything is very silent thanks to the case noise absorbing material and the most silent PSU I found on the market. I like the choice because in case i'll ever overclock, I'll be ready for it, just have to add a good CPU cooler system, a couple of fans and it will be cool. The case even comes with a fan regulator to mount on the back for the purpose.
Opting for the integrated graphic also let me save some money, but, if I ever decide to upgrade, this case give me the option to mount a large graphic card by just rotating the internal HDD module, so it won't become outdated easily ;-)
I use the Mac mainly for photographs, video editing and post processing, so Lightroom, Final Cut and After Effect, and, with such horsepower, it's being really good at it! Actually, I'm quite impressed, and it doesn't feel like I'm going to need a graphic card at the moment, the HD3000 is behaving fine.. coming from a late 2009 MacBook Pro, well, it's a big step ahead.
Step by step Installation Process:
The BIOS
my card came with F9, I updated to F11
- Load optimized defaults with F7[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
- Set the Ram for the integrated graphics: Advanced BIOS Features - On-Chip Frame Buffer Size. I have 16GB RAM, so I set it to the max 480MB+2MB for GTT.
see Stork build for screenshotshttp://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=36296[/*:m:1fzji6tz] - set the XMP Profile from Default to Profile1 only if ram sticks are 1600mhz[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
- Change HPET to 64-bit[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
- Set BIOS to use ACHI instead of IDE (twice, one for the Intel controller and one for the Marvell one)[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
- Save[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
Installing Lion with Unibeast
- Install with unibeast as described in the dedicated post http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2011/10/unibeast-install-mac-os-x-lion-using.html
If you're going dual boot with win7 follow steps 1 to 3 of this guide:http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2009/11/dual-boot-windows-7-and-os-x-snow.html)[/*:m:1fzji6tz] - Keep in mind that you will need to boot with GraphicsEnabler=No as the system still see the HD3000 as Unsupported graphics! [/*:m:1fzji6tz]
- Remember also that VGA port does not work with Lion, you can only use it with GraphicsEnabler=No (which makes no point a part from setup reasons) and no, you cannot plug a DVI to VGA adapter as the DVI on this gigabyte board its of the -D type, so if you have an old VGA monitor like me you can only use it with windows (i'm using it with dual monitor setup in win7)[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
So now you should be able to boot in Lion (still using GraphicsEnabler=No)
so you can proceed to the hacks
The HAcks
- prepare the following files in a usb drive or whatever:
- DSDT for Z68MX-UD2H-B3 ver. F11 from Tony's DSDT Database http://www.tonymacx86.com/dsdt.php[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
- Multibeast 4.2.1 from http://www.tonymacx86.com/C:Dq-OCPpT/MultiBeast-4.2.1.zip[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
- MacOSX10.7.2. combo update from Apple http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1459
(thread about 10.7.2 http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2011/10/mac-os-x-1072-update.html)[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
Multibeast
- Once you are on your desktop, plug in the USB Drive with the stuff on it, place DSDT.aml (rename it!!) on the desktop and open Apple Combo Update and MB.[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
- Install Combo update, do NOT restart![/*:m:1fzji6tz]
- Select the options as in this screenshot for MultiBeast:
(i've selected TRIM Enabler because of the SSD drive)
multibeast.jpg[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
That's it! Reboot and you should be fine
In my case i have an HDMI monitor and a VGA so when i boot the VGA get stucked on the grey apple screen but the HDMI works fine, i'haven't tried yet dual monitor on lion because i don't have any DVI monitor.. still! even a DVI to HDMI adapter should be ok with a second HDMI monitor as long as you use the mini definitions.
HDMI Audio
- Follow this post to enable audio on HDMI port, it just works!
just keep in mind that you cannot use volume control on HDMI ports, use your monitor volume.

Backup
just in case anything happens i secured my happy working Lion partition:
- boot from unibeast usb drive [/*:m:1fzji6tz]
- open disk utility and restore your lion partition to another partition on a second disk (i used the 2TB hard drive)
whatever might happen you can switch back. I also installed and configured my main apps so if i'll ever need a restore i'm ready to go.[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
Issues and Fixes
Everything's working fine, even if i get some little annoyances with external USB disks and realtek lan which sometimes has to be deactivated and activated to have it connected back, but i guess this is going to be solved in future driver releases.
I'm not sure usb 3.0 it's working full speed neither, but doesn't bother me..
Apart from that i'm a happier person
could not believe when i got 12800 points out of geek bench! and it was 32bit test..
Hope this would help people with the same mobo saving some time,
I wish to thank all the people of this forum whose effort helped me out with my build,
thank you for sharing precious knoweledge and time, making this better everyday!
next hack i'm going to spend some time on tomorrow.. http://tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=7 ... +bluetooth
will let you know..
EDIT
- changed RAM modules from Corsair Blu to White, these are Low Profile which let more space in case of a future cpu cooler and they suck less power, 1.35 Vs 1.5[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
- failed with the bluetooth/airport module hack. Just the airport is working at the moment, i'm too bad at soldering [/*:m:1fzji6tz]
- Dual monitor is working like a charm! have one old Dell Vga as primary monitor plugged in the displayport thanks to a HP DPtoVGA adapter, and a second monitor to HDMI
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140605339309[/*:m:1fzji6tz] - Sleep issues not completely fixed but i can live with that:
wake up works fine on 2.0 usb ports, not 3.0.
I use "Jettison" (2$ App Store) for external drives ejects before sleep, it does the trick[/*:m:1fzji6tz]
