Okay, reinstalled everything...couple of goes with multibeast to get audio working....definitely don't touch Voodoo audio kexts. I also flashed my bios up to F7 (not sure what is was before) and installed the DSDT for this mobo.

Now I just need to work out how to image this instalkl as it is now so I don't have to fart arse around if I mess something up again

Download Carbon Copy Cloner from here: http://www.bombich.com/
It's free and really easy to use.
You just need an empty hard drive or a partition to clone the existing installation.

Thanks abaco, I have a 2TB HDD that I am adding into the system, so that would be perfect, plus a backup of that to my NAS box - can never be too cautious :lol:

Assuming you will use the 2TB HDD to clone the OSX partition, you have to create a partition on the 2TB HDD for the cloned OSX image, because all files on that partition will be deleted.

Thanks for the tip ! How big is a cloned image? The SSD I have OSX on is 128GB, so I should just make a partition on the 2TB HDD 128GB as well?

Hey, sorry for the slow response. We've just moved.

I used the guide at:
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=256729&st=0

It's enough to get you 90% up and running with Lion. Follow it very carefully to create your bootable USB

You'll also want to grab a more recent version of Chameleon, which right now is 2.0 RC5 1164. Use this for your USB installer and your completed Lion install.
http://www.kexts.com/cat/2-bootloaders.html

I used the dsdt from:
http://www.tonymacx86.com/dsdt.php

Here's the settings you'll need to get audio going, post-install:

You'll also need this network driver for the 2x ethernet ports:

I had to make corrections to my smbios.plist to have the proper (overclocked) CPU speed show up in "About This Mac". SMmaximalClock is the clock speed, and SMcputype set to 1793 is a Core i7.

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
	<key>SMbiosdate</key>
	<string>02/07/11</string>
	<key>SMbiosversion</key>
	<string>MBP81.88Z.0047.B04.1102071707</string>
	<key>SMcputype</key>
	<string>1793</string>
	<key>SMfamily</key>
	<string>MacBookPro</string>
	<key>SMmanufacter</key>
	<string>Apple Inc.</string>
	<key>SMmaximalclock</key>
	<string>4000</string>
	<key>SMmemspeed</key>
	<string>2133</string>
	<key>SMproductname</key>
	<string>MacBookPro8,1</string>
	<key>SMserial</key>

</dict>
</plist>

How are you guys breaking things enough that you need to re-install, anyhow? Just boot from the DVD/USB and fire up Terminal to fix whatever is needed, remove kexts, etc. :)
