After my Mini Deluxe build (i5, GA-H77N-Wifi, nVidia GT640) got too flaky (shutdown issues) then finally refused to book properly, I figured it was time to upgrade the 3 year old machine...

Chose the March 2016 mATX build for value & proven/popular build.
i7 4790K
Gigabyte GA-Z97M-D3H
Palit GeForce GTX750
IOGear Bluetooth 4.0 USB dongle
OCZ 250GB SSD (system & apps)
1 TB 7200rpm HDD (x2) for work
32GB Crucial 1600mhz memory
Fractal Design case (from last build)
Corsair 450w modular power (from last build)

Initial install seemed to go well - but I obviously messed up somewhere & got a box that wouldn't boot from anything...

Reset CMOS and try again!

1_BIOS
select optimum defaults
Set memory to XMP (profile 1) to get 1600mhz memory speed
VT-d set to disable
Save & Exit
That really was all!!

2_Followed UniBeast: Install OS X El Capitan on Any Supported Intel-based PC guide
Install done with 8gb ram in slot 1
GeForce card removed - used onboard graphics
Made UniBeast installer on a 16gb Sandisk USB2 stick
Booted from rear USB2 socket (remembered issues on last build)
Into installer - Disk Utility - Erase/format the SSD
Install El Capitan to SSD

3_Post install
Boot from USB again, at boot loader screen chose the SSD/OS X
Finish OS X setup
Run MultiBeast
Settings:
Quick start UEFI Boot Mode
Audio > Realtek ALC892 and HD 4600 HDMI Audio
Disk > 3rd party SATA
Misc > FAKE SMC with plugins & HWmonitor app
Network > RealtekRTL8111 v2.10d1
USB > 7/8/9 series
Bootloaders > Clover UEFI
Defininitions > Mac Pro 3,1

Installed & shut down

4_remove USB

5_Normal startup = fine!!
download & install nVidia drivers

6_shutdown & insert graphics card (& remember to move monitor cable over !!)

7_Done - time for a beer!

Very pleased with result.
Only found issues/questions:
  1. If mac goes to sleep fully, on awaken the sound is lost.
  2. Not sure if I have the best system definition?
  3. Haven't test if USB3 is working (any easy checks? or just time a file transfer?!)
  4. Not sure about the TRIM on SSD. No option in MultiBeast anymore. Read some differing views about it. Think I will try the Terminal code route.
I really recommend buying a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner and make at least one bootable copy of your system. Then update the clone BEFORE any updates/changes/every month.

Only my second build - so any advice/improvements/tips gratefully received!

EDIT: Success install of EL CAP, had to remove GFX card (ASUS GTX 970 STRIX) and memory sticks (4x4GB ballistix Tactical) except one to get to install. Then it went smoothly.

Sound works (used only ALC 892 kext in Multibeast, nothing additional, no HD 4600 or Toleda fix drivers), after sleep mode sound works. Had to choose right output in OS X sys. prefs thou. Installed all updates for EL CAP then installed alternate nvidia drivers and inserted GFX card in. Works like charm.

I have included Multibeast setup here.
