Comments

I had an mATX build in mind since last year but I kept putting it off thinking it would be difficult to pull off but after the start of the new year, I decided to pull the trigger and start the build for my first hackintosh. I red the guides provided by tonymacx86, and I finally understood how to do it. I decided to use a Gigabyte B85M-DS3H-A due to having the fewest compatibility issues and the cheaper price-point, but at the same time had a lot of nice features like USB 3.0 headers, 4 DIMM slots, etc. It was a nice starting point, and I decided that I would much rather use the onboard HD 4600 as I wont be gaming on this machine. At first, I decided to go with an i3, but then I decided that i wanted 4 cores over 2 just as preference. I went with the S model processor because I wanted it to be low power consumption and less heat as I would just be using the stock cooler. The build cost me approximately $350USD, bought the parts when they came on sale

Pricing Rundown for the selected parts at the time of sale:
Case: $30
Motherboard: $40
CPU: $145
Memory: $30
PSU: $35
SSD: $60
Keyboard: $15
Total: $355

Installation Notes

I followed the guide provided on this site to a T. It was easy and fast, no hiccups... thanks Tonymacx86!
There were nothing different I did during the setup, if you follow the guide you will be fine.

Download El Capitan from the app store and run UniBeast to create a boot drive onto a 8GB or larger flash drive.

In the BIOS, the board already comes with the latest update of F2 pre-installed. I loaded optimized defaults, saved and exited. I plugged in the USB drive, and the installation began and finished without a hiccup. I ran MultiBeast and selected the options for Realtek ALC887 and Realtek LAN drivers (the Ethernet worked out of the box but i still installed the driver), selected MacPro6,1 settings and pressed install

Edit:

After installation, you are able to upgrade to 10.11.3 from the app store directly.

Update:

-Added 2 more DIMMs of 2x4 1600 ram making it a total of 4x4 16GB
-Added a BCM94360D AC1300 WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 Card made originally for the iMac...works natively on the hackintosh
just having issues connecting to my ac signal...works fine over the n signal
Pricing: PCI Adapter $25 + Wifi Card $28 both from ebay

I modified the side panel and put in a window.

*SUCCESS! Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H-A with i5-4590s 8GB ram

i tried to edit as best as possible

Awesome budget build! I have the exact same motherboard -- I recently bought it went it was on sale. I opted for the i3-4170 and since it has Intel HD Graphics 4400, I got a PNY GeForce 460 GTX. Hopefully it'll go as smoothly as your install did.

How is the Macally keyboard by the way?

It's not that bad...soft keys, has the full Apple layout and the price point was good 15 dollars

The i3 comes at a good price. I just didn't want to spend extra on a decent graphics card so I decided to go with a chip with a 4600.

The only game I really play is CS:GO, and I have another PC with an Intel HD 2000 (ivy) that runs it pretty good. I haven't tried out the gaming on this yet (still waiting for my wifi card to come in from china, next week probably) but i expect the 4600 to do fine in old gaming.

My main PC has a GTX 650 which does all my pre 2010 gaming at max resolution.

Hi. I have exactly the same Motherboard, with an i5 processor. My attempt was not successful, so would you tell me about your exact BIOS config and all the kexts selected in MultiBeast, please?

selected MacPro6,1 settings

Why did you choose this MacPro6,1 instead of the iMac 14,2 which I though was recommended for Haswell machines? Did you have to delete/patch any kexts with this SMBIOS def, as in the past?

I set up EL CAPITAN, same board you used: but man, Gigabyte pisses me off with their ridiculous Syntax/logic in their naming of boards. I thought I had brought the b85m-ds3h and drove myself crazy trying to update the bios for that board (currently F15). I had originally planned to use OZMOSIS bios, but there is none pre-built for the b85m-ds3h-A board.

Okay, enough complaining: the install was not quite so smooth, but no catastrophy, only the second time using Clover and it is a steep learning curve.

I managed to get sound only working with Toleda/Pikes ALC120 command script, and only the headphone output works. Perhaps I chose the wrong pin layout. Also important to deactivate SIP via clover-configurator, at first not even the script worked. Damn EL CAPITANO security already had me wishing I had installed Yosemite instead on this machine.

The only other annoyance, using Intels HD4400 graphics is just before reaching the desktop there is a rather ugly video glitch, which looks PAINFUL to the machine. But then graphics seem to work fine.

And what about Sierra or High Sierra? Just want to be sure it works before buying.
