I had an mATX build in mind since last year but I kept putting it off thinking it would be difficult to pull off but after the start of the new year, I decided to pull the trigger and start the build for my first hackintosh. I red the guides provided by tonymacx86, and I finally understood how to do it. I decided to use a Gigabyte B85M-DS3H-A due to having the fewest compatibility issues and the cheaper price-point, but at the same time had a lot of nice features like USB 3.0 headers, 4 DIMM slots, etc. It was a nice starting point, and I decided that I would much rather use the onboard HD 4600 as I wont be gaming on this machine. At first, I decided to go with an i3, but then I decided that i wanted 4 cores over 2 just as preference. I went with the S model processor because I wanted it to be low power consumption and less heat as I would just be using the stock cooler. The build cost me approximately $350USD, bought the parts when they came on sale
Pricing Rundown for the selected parts at the time of sale:
Case: $30
Motherboard: $40
CPU: $145
Memory: $30
PSU: $35
SSD: $60
Keyboard: $15
Total: $355
Installation Notes
I followed the guide provided on this site to a T. It was easy and fast, no hiccups... thanks Tonymacx86!
There were nothing different I did during the setup, if you follow the guide you will be fine.
Download El Capitan from the app store and run UniBeast to create a boot drive onto a 8GB or larger flash drive.
In the BIOS, the board already comes with the latest update of F2 pre-installed. I loaded optimized defaults, saved and exited. I plugged in the USB drive, and the installation began and finished without a hiccup. I ran MultiBeast and selected the options for Realtek ALC887 and Realtek LAN drivers (the Ethernet worked out of the box but i still installed the driver), selected MacPro6,1 settings and pressed install
Edit:
After installation, you are able to upgrade to 10.11.3 from the app store directly.
Update:
-Added 2 more DIMMs of 2x4 1600 ram making it a total of 4x4 16GB
-Added a BCM94360D AC1300 WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 Card made originally for the iMac...works natively on the hackintosh
just having issues connecting to my ac signal...works fine over the n signal
Pricing: PCI Adapter $25 + Wifi Card $28 both from ebay
Pictures of my RIG:
I modified the side panel and put in a window.
