Comments / Installation Method
This Hackintosh was originally built as a Windows gaming rig but on a whim I googled my MOBO and found a success post here on TonyMacx86 from evanhindra who had a very similar build up and running successfully on 10.8 CREDIT: http://www.tonymacx86.com/user-buil...-asus-gtx-gtx680-dc2t-2gd5-os-x-10-8-2-a.html *THANKS* Realizing that I could have a machine that would be the best of both OS X and Windows rather than just a gaming rig, I unplugged all my drives and gave it a shot. The result is a top class gaming rig with a massive steam library that default boots into an OS X installation that is running Plex easily on a "Sysop" account set to Auto Login while also having resources/overhead for fast user switching between myself, my wife, and my three children. OS X boots to the OWC 6G SSD and Plex has 3x of the 2TB HDDs for content. Additionally one of those drives has a 120GB partition for SuperDuper to Smart Update nightly.
That being said, the method below has produced an impressive desktop that easily boots into Windows 8.1 (tested, reverted to Windows 7 for personal preference). I am using the OCZ 80GB SSD above for Windows and gave it one of the 2TB HDDs for my Steam Library.
1.) Unplugged all drives
2.) UniBeast 3 USB Key with OSX Mavericks. Ran it as installed, no tweaks, first run 100% successful.
3.) Booted to desktop, Settings -> Security - > Allow Apps from Anywhere AND ensured auto system updates were OFF
4.) Ran Multibeast 6 chose:
-QUICK START: DSDT Free
-DRIVERS:
-Audio: Without DSDT -> ALC892
-Disk: 3rd Party SATA; TRIM Enabler: 10.9.0 TRIM Patch
-Graphics: Default
-Misc: Left Default
-Network: Intel - hnak's AppleIntelE1000e V2.5.4d
-System: Patched AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement OS X 10.9.0
-BOOTLOADERS:
-Chimera V2.2.1
-CUSTOMIZE:
-Basic Boot Options (by default)
-Generate CPU States
-Hibernate Mode - Desktop
-Use KernelCache
-SSDT Options: (left alone)
-System Definitions (MacPro3,1)
-Theme (left alone)
After this ran I shut down, removed the UniBeast thumb drive and rebooted, everything came up fine but I had no iMessage so I added FileNVRAM.dylib to /Extras/modules/ and rebooted which resolved the iMessage problem.
Powered down, plugged in all the other drives, removed UniBeast thumb drive, verified dual booting to Windows, called it a day.
As of the writing of this post uptime is 2 days, 42 minutes without a hitch. This includes video encoding time, Plex DB build, homework, browsing, playing the Hearthstone beta, etc. It is working perfectly… well aside from the minor notes below.
Issues outstanding are:
1. No location data (I believe this is due to no WiFi card)
2. USB is dead after waking from sleep (which I resolve by not sleeping the system. Its a Plex server so I didn't need it to sleep anyway).
3. Not really an issue but if you didn't catch it in the build notes the GTX690 only recognizes 1xGPU @ 2048MB. I knew this would happen going in but primarily purchased this card for the Windows side of the house for steam apps.
Other than that my GeekBench64 scores felt low at 14,000 so there may be some optimizations that need to take place. I will keep an eye on in the community for possible tweaks and try to get that score up over the coming weeks as I also work to resolve the sleep issue.
Happy to help anyone with a similar build and likewise taking any suggestions you have about mine. Good luck!
