The Build

29 sept 2012

IMG_7041.JPG

First up was the sole combining of all the parts. I wanted to test everything before cutting up the G5 case. I followed this guide for the BIOS setup:

http://www.tonymacx86.com/99-quick-guide-configuring-uefi-gigabyte-s-7-series-lga-1155-boards.html

The BIOS isn't 3D, but the menu structure is the same.

Two things I did differently:
- If you want to run VMWare/Paralles, then don't forget to enable virtualization, else the system will reboot. (Intel Virtualization Technology under BIOS Features)
- My SSD wasn't recognized, so I had to change SATA Mode selection.

OS X installed just fine :)

After I got the system running it was time to prepare the G5 case. The case I'm using is from a 1,6 Ghz G5. After stripping everything out (except the HD tray), it was time to cut it up:

Next after the backplate was the motherboard plate, to be able to install the mATX in the G5 case:

After the motherboard plate was in, the fan assembly had to be modified and mounted to the back:

Time to install the remaining parts!

I've installed a PCI USB bracket inside the case for the WiFi dongle and Bluetooth dongle. Now it doesn't take up space at the back :)

As it is at the moment:

The M-Audio Fasttrack Pro works natively with Mac OS X. The rear audio out of the motherboard is also working, but not using it.

The Sony DVD-burner came from a donor PC. It was as good as new. The problem was: it's an IDE interface. So I had to use a convertor to SATA. Working great and saved me some bucks!

To get the eject button working, I had to install the AHCI_3rdParty_SATA.kext file:

Temp cooling system ;)

TO DO:

IMG_0114.JPG

Installing a soundrecord-module to hear the glories Mac chimes at startup:

IMG_0238.JPG

A lot of cable management and soldering has to be done. All the cables for the power of the fans has to be made. The power supply is going to sit in the old G5 power supply. I want to use the spare space for cable storage. After making my own cables, it will hold the access cables.

Also, I want to reuse the old SATA power cables from the G5 case, so I can still properly use the original harddisk tray.

I'm going to mount two big fans in the front with a piece of aluminum, but still figuring out how to do it.

I'll keep you posted!

Nice job MrBlonde. Looking forward to the finished result.

I never did do one of those chime mod.s - are you going to re-use the original G5 speaker for that?

Don't know yet. The first thing is getting the cooling system to work, so the sidepanel can be mounted back again.

I've got the original G5 speaker, so I'm going to try that first.

Looking good so far! I'm planning on purchasing one of those G5 conversion kits from Laser hive as well. It does truly look awesome, I love how it lets you reuse the existing pci slots and the original fans for the back.

I must say I'm very happy with the kit. The support from Laser Hive via mail is very good and quick!

I liked that you can keep the top plate where the HD tray sits, because now it's still usable.

Hey There,
I just wanted to ask about your q77 mobo from gigabyte, how was setup with this mobo, havnt seen any other sources on the internet and hackintosh about this mobo so...

THANKS

Hey, nice build, I actually used this build myself to make my own Hack. The only problem is that the machine keeps hanging up at boot up on the Audio Drivers. The only driver that seems to work is the Generic Driver. Mind sharing some knowledge on if you ran into the same problem?
