Apple have not used VGA in their products for more than ten years so unsurprisingly they do not include support for it in their operating system(s).

That would be my best guess - No way to tell until you try with supported hardware.

thanks for your help spent 3 hours trying to get it to work lol, hope my monitor arrives soon and I'll give it a Go, is any type of dvi supported or does it have to be HDMI?

Yes it is. I had the same issue. I was plugged up with a vga. I switched to div and whala!
