still waiting for root device

i tried to instal 10.6.8 from 10.6.3 in my HP pavillion dv6 on my external hard disk and during reboot i got an error as still waiting for root device.
any suggestions please?
if needed i can provide snapshots?

Still waiting for root device error occured because the appropriate Sata/Pata driver isn’t being loaded
