nope. Gray screen no cursor now.

maybe I'm not explaining my problem clearly enough. This gray screen occurs after the -v text is done scrolling, at about the time I would normally be sent to the login screen.

Set graphics card as your primary video adapter in BIOS.
Disable Internal Graphcis in BIOS if the option available.

Then try booting with "dart=0 nv_disable=1 -f -v"

If the above resulting to the same result as previous, try to boot from bootable USB.

That got it up to the login screen at least but it only beach balls after I type my password

It will boot from the install disk.

Unless anyone has any brilliant ideas, I'm just going to do a complete reinstall.

Did a complete reinstall, and after migration assistant (minus "system settings" so as to not potentially load whatever bad kexts I had before), my files seem to be in order and gray screen error is gone.

NOW, I have a host of new issues, which I can only imagine arose out of the screwed up permissions.

*"iCloud preferences pane cannot be loaded", and i cannot access iCloud drive
*"Internet accounts pane cannot be loaded" -- probably related
