Yesterday I replaced my two Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB SSDs in my "Mini-ITX 1" computer (below) with two Sandisk 1 TB SATA III SSDs. Since then, Spotlight returns incorrect filenames. For instance, I typed Heaven in the Spotlight window, and it returned a letter that I had written in 2015. Also, the "Applications" heading is missing. I looked at the checkboxes in System Preferences and "Applications" is checked. I also waited for "Indexing" to complete before typing in my desired request, but the problem has stayed. All else seems to work; if I navigate to an app, it opens and runs properly. Is there a way to fix Spotlight short of re-installing High Sierra?
[Edit: Found this site that has the answer. For me, the following Terminal command fixed the problem: sudo mdutil -E / apparently rebuilds the Spotlight index.]
