Of course you need metal drill bits…

Of course the bit will be made out of metal, but is there a specific kind of "reinforced" bit or something special that I need for drilling through the metal in the top shelf? Or can I just use any old drill bit like the ones that came with the drill?

False, any drillbit will work. The ones you have for wood work perfectly on metal, plastic, anything!

Hehe, what I was trying to say was there are drill bits for:
- wood
- cement (walls)
- metal

And you shouldn't use a drill bit for wood on a metal plate…

Why not? They work just the same. On the box it says it's good for wood, plastic and metal.

Ok… if they are made for all tasks, sure. But in general you shouldn't cross use them. The design of drill bits for metal are different as the one for wood.

You can usually use a metal bit on wood, but you can destroy wood bits using them to drill harder materials.
