I know this is a common problem, no audio on OS X. This is an upgrade from Mavericks -> Yosemite and now El Capitan. I had audio working fine in Yosemite, although I don't remember exactly how I did it.
I've tried running audio_cloverALC-110_v1.0j and while an audio device is detected, there's no audio.
I have 5 options, Internal Speakers, 2 Line Out's, Digital Out and AirPlay. I have nothing in the room with this machine to try the digital out and AirPlay isn't how I want audio to work. Plus the AirPlay devices are in other rooms.
I've tried all three of the other options and they all do the same. I've tried all 8 audio out ports on my machine on all three options as well. There's 6 on the back of the machine and 2 on the front panel. When I plug into all connectors, I get the 'internal Speakers' option except the front panel audio jack. "Internal Speakers" turns into "Headphones".
I know I have a legacy ALC888 audio chip. The number on the chip is ALC888S, in case that helps someone. Everything else in this upgrade went very well, just no audio (and I can't seem to get my background image selection to stick, it reverts to default after each reboot). I use this machine to work with video files with audio so I kinda need it to work. Hoping I'm not SOL with the upgrade.
In case anyone wonders, I'm using this machine because so far it's working very well, and I had already purchased it before I started working with OS X.
UPDATE: I've now tried to install audio with Multibeast 8.0. THANK YOU for all the hard work making this release happen. Unfortunately, audio still doesn't work. I've tried all three versions of the Voodoo driver with no success. I'm getting an error trying to install the ALC888 Legacy driver. I've included the error below the config entry. I also looked in the Multibeast log file to determine that while I did install the Multibeast 7.1.1 version of the ALC888 Legacy driver, the last driver I installed was the VoodooHDA v2.7.3 driver. Looks like I tried v.2.8.4 and 2.8.2 before landing on that one. That version is not available in Multibeast 8.0. When I try to open the VoodooHDA helper in System Preferences, I get the error: "No VoodooHDA Devices Detected". Same error on all three VoodooHDA versions.
I have not tried to install anything else with Multibeast, only the audio drivers. I'm open to all suggestions at this point. As I pointed out earlier, everything else is working, including iMessage so I'm reluctant to make too many changes outside of audio.
