SMBIOS sys definition that allows optical drive?

i have an MSI H81M that under el capitan enabled the optical drive to show up in system profiler.


i upgraded to sierra and now the optical drive is never recognized.


i am using iMac14,2, which i know didn't include an optical drive.


what system definition are folks using in order to use their optical drive?


i'm using a Haswell CPU.

I would have thought that SATA being SATA the presence of an optical drive should not be dependent on the SMBIOS.

Your board has both SATA 3Gb/s and SATA 6Gb/s ports, check that the drive is connected to a SATA 3Gb/s port.
For preference the drive should be connected to an Intel SATA port if there is a choice.
