Shall I return my Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 6870 gpu??? Is there a gpu that is just going to work - maybe a reliable nvadia.

All I can find is posts saying I can not get it fully functioning on custom build 4. Its displays as n140, I have this issue.

Has any one got it fully functional on 10.6.8 with z68x-UD5-B3 bios f8. If so what did you do? What's your screen setup?

I'm also only on 10.6.8 let me know if Lion can assist.

Insight really peps appreciated. thx. :headbang:

Have you installed the latest CHIMERA bootloader?

Yes I have installed the latest version of Chimera Bootloader. I followed these instructions:

http://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=29510

I managed to get all up and running ok. I also found another topic with similar instructions except at end userDSTD + custom Utilities was added whilst booted in iboot. This worked with F8 userDSTD from database for my GA-Z68X-UD5-B3 (f8) mother board.

This is the only way to install the DSTD.

Rebooted totally fine.

I was then advised to change the boot file in /extras with PCIRootUID = 1.

This is what screwed me up, after reboot I got a black screen after the white apple load screen. I have heard similar symptoms from other users.

It could be something to do with the port im using on the GPU. At present its the the top DVI-(I) with VGA adapter. After reading loads of threads it seems that the black screen can lead you to believe its crashed when it has not, its the lack of sync with your screen.

Im at work now, ive been to the local electronic store (maplins) and bought every type of lead and adapter i could for testing. I will come back here with some clear results.

There seems to be too much conflicting info around and I want help get a concise set of instructions. This is a recommended build which to be honest should not be recommended. 2 1/2 days to get osx running.

Yes I did read macmans comments which made think I should not worry but if you read further into the article some people mention it does affect performance with various apps such as DVD player.

At the end of the day I just want a fully working reliable system I can forget about once up and running. Hence why I may wash my hands of the Gigabyte 6870, but not without a fight first.

I will keep updating this list, once tested I will report on my findings. Please come in on this if you have a working config.

My Powercolor 6870 worked out of the box. All that was needed was GE=Y. Maybe try a different brand of 6870?

It was a world of difference from mt 6670 which needed hacking and extra Chimera flags to get working.
