AppleInsider confirms the early reports that iMacs are due to be refreshed this week.
More specifically, people familiar with the matter say Apple plans to introduce the new models on Tuesday, May 3, swapping out the systems' first-gen Core i processors and miniDisplay ports for second-generation Core i chips and the company's new high-speed Thunderbolt port.

May 3rd is believed to be scheduled as a day for promotional materials at Apple stores to be changed out, likely marking the release of a new product.

Apple is widely expected to adopt Thunderbolt across their product line from here on out. They first introduced Thunderbolt on the MacBook Pros released in February. Thunderbolt promises a faster connector technology to drive external displays, hard drives and more.

What kinds of changes are we expecting (or hoping) this to bring to the x86 community?

Right now the kernel that ships with the 10.6.7 MBP Update is 10.7.3- which has some Sandy Bridge support, but as far as I know, no Turbo support. Desktop support in general is not altogether released- we need new "desktop" Macs to be able to get full Speedstep/Turbo modes (via AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext) on these new chips.

So when we get an official update (10.6.8 soon?) the support will most likely be in there. :thumbup:

Booyah :¬)

About damn time! :p

As of now I'm pretty damn excited about Sandy Bridge.. just waiting for the iMac updates!
Theres just one question lingering in my head, as to why Apple shifted to ATI GPUs from NVidia in their main-level computers? Only the MacBook Air or the Mac Mini support an Nvidia GPU (320M only) ..

Oh well.. :p lets see what happens :)

Apple store closed!!!

SB iMacs in 3, 2, 1....

As predicted, the Apple Store went down this morning. We’ve just heard that these are the new Sandy Bridge, Thunderbolt-equipped iMacs:

So there is only one 21.5-inch iMac now which starts with a Quad-Core Sandy Bridge processor and 4GB of RAM and 1TB hard drive.

The 27-inch iMacs come in three varieties starting with a 2.7GHz Quad core and going up to a 3.4GHZ Quad-Core. All three have 4GB of RAM (starting at) and 1TB hard drives.

* Core i5 2400 à 3,1 GHz 4 coeurs 4 fils turbo à 3,4 GHz
* Core i7 2600 à 3,4 GHz 4 coeurs 8 fils turbo à 3,8 GHz
* Pour l'entrée de gamme ce sera certainement le Core i5 2500S doté de 4 coeurs 4 fils à 2,7 GHz turbo à 3,7 GHz.
