When my computer wouldn't sleep properly, I set the Energy Saver pref to never sleep. However, now that I'm able to sleep, I'm wondering if it's safe to let it go to sleep on its own after x minutes.

You should be fine to use timer sleep. Sometimes people have trouble getting it to work (this isn't a hack issue so much as a Mac OS X issue), in which case you can use a program called PleaseSleep to make sure that it falls asleep properly by timer.

I was just about to ask this.

My hackmac sleeps no problem using Tony's guide (thanks man).

Although it sleeps via the apple->sleep menu, it just won't sleep on its own despite my settings at the energy tab in preferences.

I am on a EX58-UD3R & i7 running 10.6.3 without the new sleepenabler.kext which gave a KP on shut down
