S/PDIF In Support in OSX

While preparing to update an old motherboard (GA-EP45-UD3P) because it has 'S/PDIF (Toslink) In' onboard, I noticed that my Macbook Pro (17" Mid 2010) which has both 'S/PDIF In' and 'S/PDIF Out' no longer shows 'S/PDIF In' either in 'System Preferences' or 'About this Mac > System Report > Audio > Built-In Input' anymore when a mini-SPDIF cable is plugged in. Does anyone know at which version OS X dropped support for S/PDIF In?

I'm not 100% sure but I think that it ended in 2016 with with the release of Sierra. You could try installing that and El Capitan and do some testing.

Thank you for your reply trs96; my Macbook Pro Mid 2010 is on High Sierra (last version that can be run on it); pretty sure I still have my El Capitan SSD for it, will connect it externally, boot to it and see what I find.

FWIW, on my Mac Mini(s) 6,2 (2012), the optical S/PDIF option doesn't appear until a Mini-TOSLINK connector is fully inserted into one of the audio i/o ports.

It's the same with the Macbook Pro, jiffyslot- input and output. I checked them with the mini-SPDIF cables connected, but thanks for the reminder, it's something I might easily forgotten, given the few times I've used them recently.
