I've already scoured the web and forums before deciding to post about this. I've come across a few other people on Radeon Vii's with the identical KP I'm getting but it doesn't seem anyone's found a solution. The only suggestion I've even come across was to downgrade to bios F10, but that had no change. I upgraded from a Vega 56 to the Radeon Vii, after being on for a while eventually the computer will always KP. Had no issues with the Vega 56, just wanted max available GPU power under Mac OS. Now I have a $750 continuous kernel panic. :banghead:

There seems to be other people running the card without kernel panics, just sleep issues and DisplayPort audio. I don't sleep my machine or use DP audio, so I thought I'd be fine. I thought maybe it was something I needed to change in my settings/config going from Vega 56 to Radeon Vii but I'm not sure. There is a video on YouTube from a woman who insists the card is mint and stable in all her systems and has no issues since 10.14.5...

Is this literally just a "no solution until Apple fixes their driver" thing, or is there something I can do? I am on the latest 10.14.6 which is supposed to include improved support for the card. Please can someone help me, is this on Apple or on me??? I actually want it to be on me, I want to use this new card!

@jaymonkey,

You helped get me sorted with my IQS, SSDT etc, this is the last piece of my puzzle. There is a certain Hackintosh video channel on YouTube who is insisting this card is all good under Mac OS and that these kernel panics must be because I have something configured wrong. Everything is fine and working without panics with my Vega 56. When the Vii is in, VideoProc still reports everything properly working, but then the kernel panics happen. Oddly as well, I noticed randomly a few times upon booting, the Vii's acceleration didn't load; I lost app/menu transparency, but the card still identified properly in ATM.

Is this on the Apple driver? Is there something in my config I have to change to fix this? Thanks again in advance!

@EpicNUFO,

If the system runs ok with the Vega 56 then it should work ok with the Radeon VII,

I don't have a Radeon VII to test, but I believe that other users such as @pastrychef have simply swapped out a Vega for a Radeon VII and not made any changes and all worked fine.

About the only thing I can think of is that it might be power related as I believe Radeon VII is a little bit more of a power hog than a Vega 56 .. but i'm not 100% certain on this.

Also make sure you remove any custom PowerPlayTable that you might have used with the Vega either by using the VGTab kext or by Device Property via Clover injection.

Cheers
Jay

@jaymonkey,
Thanks again for your willingness to try and help. I don't think it's a power issue, I'm running a 750w. I figured also that if the Vega 56 was all good, the Vii should just drop in...are there any hints/clues in the kernel panic? It seems to be something with the GPU and CPU, as the first core of the CPU pins when this starts happening and my cpu cooler spins up, it will run with jerky response like this for another few minutes before finally crashing.

@pastrychef,
I read through the 40-something pages of the Radeon Vii (and new AMD gpus) thread, spent hours and hours googling over the past couple days and have reviewed much discussion about this, but can't seem to find answers anywhere...any ideas?

I have the same issue, hopefully someone who has the same issue and moving to Catalina beta actually solves the issue..

Restarting my computer immediately helps with the issue > waiting for 10-20 minutes for it to clear by itself.

Anyone tried logging out and then logging in before?

@juliaan88,
If I'm able to save my work and hit restart in time, that "resets" the issue for me as it does for you. If I don't restart in time, it will kernel panic and hard reset every time. I'm just looking for an answer as to if this requires a config change or if we're waiting on Apple to fix these problems.

Thankfully my issue isn't as serious as yours, it doesn't restart by itself; it resolves by itself within 10-20 mins. It is random and it can come from any applications that I use, so I am wondering whether it is due to the macOS and if so, new parameter might be needed for the config file. This is annoying and usually for now, I won't wait and reboot almost immediately.

Will you try Catalina beta?

@juliaan88,
I'm guessing perhaps we have the same issue, your system maybe just reacts differently since you are on a different platform (Z170 vs Z370). Unfortunately I can't try any betas, this is my work machine. I've already had to swap back to my Vega 56 for now until I can get some sort of indication it's worth trying with the Vii again.

Yes, no change was needed when I switched from Vega 56 to Radeon VII.

I found the Radoen VII to be less power hungry than my Vega 56.

I highly doubt there's a configuration problem. Nothing needs to be configured when using Radeon VII. You can even skip WhateverGreen and it will work, albeit with a few things such as DRM not working.
