HD6970 and HD6950 are known not to work without the assistance of a helper card or onboard GPU.
If you want the full story read this thread at netkas.org (Be warned it is 54 pages long, ML findings start about page 28). You will probably need a package of modified kexts that netkas made that I could never find.
Even then quite a few programs that use 3d have artifacts or do not work well. Basically the current framebuffer driver from Apple is not written for these cards and it is highly unlikely that a compatible one will be, as that generation of cards is not used in any of Apples laptops/imacs/macpros. (I could be wrong, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for one)
You may want to consider selling it and getting a more compatible card. That's probably what I'm going to do.
