Hi guys,

I browsed this this forum and the golden builds forum in an attempt to create my first hackintosh. If you could spare a couple of minutes to look at it and possibly tell me what parts I shouldn't use etc I'd really appreciate it, I'm extremely knew to this.

I'm building this primarily for use with logic and will not be used for any form of gaming. I'm looking to run 3 screens and am not sure which graphics card would be the best for achieving this.

Motherboard
Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 Intel Socket 1155 Motherboard

Apologies if I should have posted this in the build section, I am aware you have a lot more knowledge with building devices specifically for use with Logic/Pro Tools.

Thanks again.

Looks good so far. Though I haven't tried it, I'm pretty sure the 6870 will drive three monitors just fine. I've got this same card in my Hack and it's great.

You'll also probably need an optical drive. Just get the Sony Optiarc on the Recommended Builds page.

Other than that, pick up a 120GB SSD and a couple 1TB or 2TB drives and you're good to go.

Oh yeah, and if you haven't settled on a case yet, I'd take a hard look at the Corsair 550D mid-tower case. It's very quiet and has lots of cooling potential.

Thanks for the reply Jonny.

I managed to pick up the FT02 case for a decent price so I'm going to go with that.

Are you able to hear the fans of the gigabyte 6870 over your case fans when its running at idle?

Edit: Just saw you have the XFX card. Recommendable over the Gigabyte?

the gigabyte 6870 youve linked to is massive, but it should be quieter, and run cooler than the xfx.

I feel like I can hear my case fans over the fan of the 6870, though I switched my Case fans to the Nexus PWM Quiet Fan and they run pretty quiet. I have the Antec P183 v3 case and I put two of these fans in front, and two in a push/pull configuration over the radiator of the Corsair H50 cooler.

Things stay pretty cool and quiet. However, the P183 has a fan opening at the top of the case, which I wish I could close off to simply exhaust out the back. This would make it a little quieter, and is the reason why I would prefer to have gone with the Corsair 550D case.

If you won't be playing any games, then go with a fanless video card like the GT 210 or similar.

I gotta say though, that dual booting and playing Crysis 2 on Extreme settings makes for a nice break. Or Portal 2 maxed out on the OSX side. Fun Fun.

I wont need to play games and I'd love a passivley cooled GPU solution but I'm not sure that this is possible if I want to use 3 monitors.

Would I be able to simply use 3 GT 210's to run 3 monitors or am I better sticking with the gigabyte?

I'm in the exact same situation. If you're just looking for 3 display capability, you only need 2 video cards (this is assuming they both have dual DVI out and not one DVI and one VGA and if you're using nVidia Fermi cards*) - you don't need 3 separate cards!

*nVidia Fermi cards cannot drive 3 monitors even if they have 3 outputs (2 DVI and 1 HDMI) - the HDMI shares the same memory as the second DVI output - bad design (cutting corners) on nVidia's part.

[edited]

Now that chimera 1.9 can detect more than one nvidia card you could get 2 cheap fanless cards you could drive up to DVI 4 monitors if you wanted. (They don't have to be setup in SLI either - thats just for gaming performance)

or you could try this - just found it on NewEgg - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814162083

Its a fanless quad nVidia 210 card... it probably won't amaze anyone in the 3D realm, but for 3-4 monitors in Logic Pro, it's just the ticket. Read the newegg comment though.

YMMV.
