Passive Single Slot Card OOB (for 10.7.3 or above, 10.8). HELP.

Hi, I have been reading the forums for months and now I have a question for which I have not found a clear answer. I have the APEX MI-008 Mini-ITX and need to get a Silent Low Profile Graphics Card OOB (for 10.7.3 or above, 10.8) as I want to use FCP X and iMovie (which does not work with HD3000). My MB is the Gygabite H61N, 16GB Ram, Cruzial M4 SSD, HD3000, i3. I also use (& need to use DVI/HDMI) Dual Monitors. All works fine (except FCP X & iMovie - these freeze or keep restarting).

Please help me with your recommendations. The only one I have seen EVGA GeForce GT210 1GB but not everyone is giving positive reviews (and the ASUS version has a heatsink that is too large for my case).

If you can accept a fan, two suggestions:
1. EVGA GT 430
2. Sapphire HD 6670 low profile - one display only
Avoid the GT 210 and GT 520.

The case doesn't need a low profile card, but finding a passive single slot card will be really hard, as most cards use rather large heatsinks when they're passively cooled.

You´re right. It is a Passive Single Slot (if I could re-edit the post title I would change it). Apologies for the confussion Toleda.

Regarding your recommendations:
- The Zotac GT 640: based on several reviews the fan noise is really bad for a card in this performance class (probably it is too small) Review here: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GT_640/
- Regarding compatibility issues for this Fermi based cards some people are having issues as mentioned in these posts http://www.tonymacx86.com/graphics/50460-gygabyte-geforce-gt-430-1gb-ddr3.html & http://legacy.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=60650 (Lion/Mountain Lion) although Macman mentions "The GeForce GT 610, GT 620, and GT 630 are supported in Lion due to them all being FERMI based cards. The device IDs will need to be added to Chimera for them too show up in System Profiler." Could you please confirm from your experience that the 630 works OOB with Lion & Mountain Lion??. Yes. That is the configuration I have (with iD Macmini5,1) and running 10.7.3 (planning to update to 10.8 as more people report less errors). iMovie starts but it closes when you try to work with the app (ie. apply an effect) after just a few minutes (very fustrating!).

I really couldn't say about the Nvidia cards, I simply made some suggestions in terms of what ought to work.
I know they're working on a new version of Chimera which should include better support for more GPU's.

Thanks. I did that and although the title is showed changed within the reply, the main post title is not changed .

Regarding the cards, I understand that Chimera´s support is one side and the other is the OS. Both must have compatibility with the GPU. I hope we have more cards compatible in the future. Since Apple´s business is no longer desktop (as much as in the past), your progress is much appreciated.

In relation to my two GPU options (i.e. ASUS GT630-2GD3), would you please confirm if any of these two are OOB 100% compatible (not doing anything else) and will work with FCPx/iMovie/Photoshop...?

Ok, changed it for you, apparently it can't be done by users in the new forums...

I really couldn't say for certain, as I haven't tested any of those cards... and as you can see from my specs, I have an AMD card...

If your going to be using FCPX or iMovie, then consider AMD cards. I think they work better for those programs then nVidia. I wish I could suggest a single lane card but, don't really know off the top of my head.

After searching for weeks in the old and new tonymac forums I have not found a single slot card that will work OOB with my HW. I am starting to think about throwing the towel and upgrade to Mountain Lion to see if my problems with HD3000 and FCPX are solved. Or maybe get an Ivy Bridge with HD4000 and try it with ML (but no successful experiences have been reported yet).

Any thoughts??
