Hi, I have over 100 user accounts for different areas of my work. I log in and out regularly. I need to use icloud to keep files in sync. Imac pro 5K with 32gb Ram. It is very slow when opening applications and if i log in and log out at 10-15 accounts per hour. My question: Should i focus on CPU or RAM ? P.s the time capsule never ever achieved first backup.

If you want more speed for opening apps the SSD read speed is of primary importance. Look into using an M.2 NVME drive instead of a mechanical or sata SSD.

An NVME drive would make the largest difference in performance. Don't know enough about APFS yet but I do know that it's advantages focus mainly on SSDs.

I made some reaearch. Would it be wise to have it external with a thunderbolt connection ?

Okay, where to get one and how to build it into an iMac ?
This is not buying advice for upgrading a real Mac. This is for CustoMacs only. I had thought you wanted to build a system to replace your iMac. Try the Apple support forums. They support what they sell, we don't.
