A few years ago I used to build and rebuild my own PCs.

Now I'm into macs, and was thinking about building a 4K editing hackintosh.

And I was just curious, I was thinking about using a motherboard with 4 ram slots (max 32gb on the motherboard).
Gigabyte GA-Z97M-D3H

And I was curious, because back in the day, i remember that it had to be a exact number o ram, for instance you had to have 1gb + 1gb, not 1gb + 500mb (1,5gb) etc.
(yes there was a time when computers would run on 1-2 gb) :headbang:

If I want to expand one day, lets say I'm on a tight budget, and buy just 1 stick of 8gb now, and then one day buy 3x 8gb, to get 32gb.
Will it run on one memory stick?
or does it have to be 4gb+4gb etc.

(sorry if the question is stupid, but I have had some traumatic experiences with custom builds, and especially the ram)

Ram these days is pretty backwards compatible. In my system I have 12gb total and 2 of the sticks are 4gb and the other 2 are 2gb and they are clocked at different speeds too, I just have them oc to 1600mhz.

thanks man! just wanted to make sure. :)

I'm making a "movie" and I wanna shoot in 4K.
need a powerful computer. my macbook retina just won't get the job done. at least not quick enough.
