Hello Folks. I'm wondering if an expert can look at this verbose screen image and suggest what I can do to fix this very old, and otherwise stable machine. Many Thanks.

Thank Pilgrim (I'll blame bloody Google then!). I'm trying to run the fixes, but can't get anything booting now. And now the newer SSD I moved my files onto has failed too! Honestly, years of plane sailing and now two problems at once. Cheers though...

I've tried following the instructions. Putting the code into Terminal while replacing the SSDs name.

chroot: /Volumes/HACK2OLD: Operation not permitted
Hack2:~ USERNAME$ rm -rf /Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle
rm: /Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/_CodeSignature/CodeResources: Permission denied
rm: /Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/_CodeSignature: Permission denied

...lot's more permission denied entries...

rm: /Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/Resources: Permission denied
rm: /Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents: Permission denied
rm: /Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle: Permission denied
Hack2:~ USERNAME$ mv var var_back # var may not exist, but this is fine
Hack2:~ USERNAME$ ln -sh private/var var
Hack2:~ USERNAME$ chflags -h restricted /var
Hack2:~ USERNAME$ chflags -h hidden /var
Hack2:~ USERNAME$ xattr -sw com.apple.rootless "" /var

(BTW I've put USERNAME in here)

So it doesn't appear to work I'm afraid. But I have got a new SSD working 90% of the way there.
