I originally built my Hackintosh in late 2011/early 2012, based on a Gigabyte Z68 motherboard and a Sandy Bridge i3 processor, using Intel HD3000 graphics, running Lion. Over time, I have:
- replaced a dead SSD;
- replaced a dead PSU;
- added the hybrid SSHD for more space for my /Users partition;
- upgraded the CPU to a Sandy Bridge i5;
- upgraded the RAM from 4x4GB 1333MHz to 2x8GB 1600MHz;
- and gone from Lion to Mountain Lion to Mavericks to Yosemite to El Capitan.
Through all of this, I never had to reinstall OS X (except when my original SSD died about a week after I finished the first build - an example of why OCZ went bankrupt).
This most recent upgrade went fairly smoothly, thanks to me doing my homework and reading the useful information pertinent to my hardware on this great forum! I ran into one problem with the MSI motherboard - at first it would always reboot right after the Apple screen. But I did a little research and found out I needed to update the BIOS so I could disable the MSR config lock, then it booted right up.
Now I've replaced this rig with a new Kaby Lake-based system; this one has been wiped clean, reinstalled with Sierra, and I plan to use it as a test bed for installing High Sierra - the beta if I get to it before it's released!
