Unless you can be sure the 8 series mainboard has an updated BIOS, I would stay away from any CPU that has in the description:
"Z87 motherboard users may need to apply a BIOS update for compatibility."

rather than the 4790s, get the 4770S - http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i7-4770S-Quad-Core-Processor-BX80646I74770S/dp/B00CO8T9VM/

Thanks Going Bald. I'm looking at the 4770S. It is also a Haswell refresh. Is this a problem? I looked on Intels website and the MOBO I'm looking at is compatible. I should good to go?

I'm also thinking of not dual booting now. Any issues with installing another SSD later and installing Windows?

i took a hdd out of a iMac and was going to take the in tell core2 duo chip from it as well. what kind of motherboard would i need to run the core 2 duo chip and 1066mhz memory, also is there a motherboard that would accept the airport card from an iMac. trying to make a new mac desktop from the parts of the iMac as the logic board is fried on it.

You can add a second drive for Windows next year if you want to wait that long.

4770S is not a Haswell refresh - it is original Haswell issue Q2 2013:
http://ark.intel.com/products/75124/Intel-Core-i7-4770S-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz

All Haswell refresh CPU's were released Q2/Q3 2014. If you go to ark intel site and do a search for any particular or even all i3, i5, i7 it will list the CPU and the release dates for each. For instance, all of the Haswell CPU's can be seen at http://ark.intel.com/products/codename/42174/Haswell?q=haswell#@All

Thank you Going Bald. I understand now. Just because it has "Haswell" in the name, doesn't mean it's the same thing

I think I'm pretty set on my build. Last thing is Monitors. Any advice? I was looking at some Samsung 27" in the $200-$300 range. I will want 2 of them.
