Hi,

Currently I have a MBP with 16gb Ram built in. I compose music with Logic Pro X and I need to built a device with 128 GB of Ram, which is upgradeable to 256 of RAM or more.

I need a very powerful Mackintosh computer for Audio production & Video editing, with 4 or 5 TB internal Hard Disk.

What would it cost me to build a 128 GB Ram computer?
And what would it approximately cost to built a computer with 256 GB of RAM?

Thanks,

Radius

Why this obsession with RAM?

My guess is around €3500? (for 128gb version).
Thing is, you need to go with really high end motherboards and XEON CPUs and stuff... Not sure how well supported they are for hackintoshing...
I guess you want the ram for samples? Go for 64gb ram and a bunch of fast NVMe/SSDs for samples/projects instead?

Current high end consumer motherboards can hold a maximum of 128GB RAM, and for that you need a X299 motherboard and 8 16GB RAM sticks, with a 6 core or higher CPU (up to 18 cores).

Here is an example : (All prices from Amazon US at time of posting, shipping excluded)
Gigabyte X299 Gaming 7 motherboard (US$400)
Core i7 7800X 6 core CPU (US$310)
Core i7 7820X 8 core CPU (US$500)
Core i9 7900X 10 Core CPU (US$924)
Core i9 7920X 12 Core CPU (US$1090)
Core i9 7940X 14 Core CPU (US$1380)
Core i9 7960X 16 Core CPU (US$1690)
Core i9 7980XE 18 Core CPU (US$1985)
Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4-2133 16GB stick X 8 (US$182 X 8 = US$1456)

Other motherboards and RAMs may cost more.

So for example, a system consisting of the X299 Gaming 7 + Core i9 7900X (10 Core) + 8 Kingston 16GB RAM sticks will cost :
400 + 924 + 1456 = US$2780 not including shipping and cost of other components. You will also need a graphics card for the system.

The X299 platform is currently not natively supported under MacOS High Sierra, though there are people with X299 builds here. The release of the iMac Pro which uses Xeon W CPUs with the same socket as the X299 CPUs means there is a reasonable possibility that future updates to High Sierra will support the X299 platform natively.

If you can source a Xeon W CPU (the same CPU used in the iMac Pro) and a corresponding server motherboard such as the Gigabyte MW51-HP0, you may be able to configure a system with 256GB or even 512GB RAM. The motherboard can accept 8 LRDIMM RAM sticks with 64GB capacity each, or 8 RDIMM RAM sticks with 32GB capacity each.

Anyone has hackintoshing experience with a Xeon W CPU in the Gigabyte MW51-HP0?
Thanks!
