Motherboard series question for first build

Hello,
This will be My first build and I have a quick question on selecting components. As my first build, would it be best to follow the most recent parts guide with 100 series mother boards and 6th gen CPUs if I want to run either El Capitan or Sierra? Or would I be ok to use an older guide with series 8 or 9 mother boards and the corresponding CPUs and other components?

It would be great to see if I could save a bit of money with last gen parts, but I don't want to cause too much of a headache for myself. So, if 100 series would make the installation process significantly easier, I'd rather go with that.

9 series works well. If you can save a fair amount of money go for a Haswell refresh system.

Cool, thanks. I'll keep looking. I live in Canada so and parts seem to be much more expensive than in the US.
