macOS Sierra PB: Need testers for new AMD Radeon drivers!

I think it's a gamble. A 280x would be a much better choice for you I think. Fast in fcpx. Works oob with no hassle.
With RX460 you need to update your os to sierra. I don't think the 460 is any faster than the 280x. Probably actually slower.

If you really want to upgrade to a modern AMD card, I would try to stretch to a RX480 4gb.
You would then need to upgrade to sierra and I would use clover as the bootloader.
The problem is it probably won't boot with either the 460 or 480 as primary. So would would need to factor in the cost of a 5450 just to be able to boot into osx if you are unable to use the GTX 460 as a bootcard.
So if you don't mind hassle, 460/480 is a good choice for you. A 280x would be much simpler, but they use more power due to being older tech.

Regarding stability. The RX480 is very stable in fcpx.

I have the RX 460 4gb and the R9 270x (r7 265), the R9 beats it by a little. But it draws 180 watts to the 75 watts of the RX. If going RX go RX 480 8gb 150 watts. The RX cards also give you some future proofing as well especially the 30 bit color capability.

Thank so much both

Rhys, i forgot to mention, yes, i'm planning sierra too.
So once again (excuse me), just to be sure: with 280X (sapphire or evga as i read... ref design anyhow) I can go sierra and boot as primary? no need second card?

The only reason i'll go 460 is 30 bit color Gigamaxx mention it. (ok, newer and cheaper too)
SO, with 460 (ok, 480.. but i guess 2*460 will do a good -openCL- job in FCP X if boards are identical AFAIK), what are the odds to run as primary? (pretty small i'm afraid... at least to be capable to use gtx 460 as 1st card)

10x once again!

I think somebody tried a gt210? As a primary for the RX card. I don't recall if it worked or not, I may pick up a Nvidia 8400 card $30 locally, and try it as igpu next weekend.

I don't know the odds of the 460 being able to boot on your system, but I would say given everyone elses experience, they are close to zero.
I'm not sure how fast the 460 is in FCPX. Maybe someone with a 460 can do the bruce x benchmark (being sure to turn off background rendering).
RX480 (red devil) does it in around 14 seconds on a 6700k @ 4.7ghz with 64gb 3000mhz ram.
I suspect that a single 480 will be faster than 2* 460 as the scaling with multiple gpu's isn't perfect (but still pretty good), but a single 480 has 36 compute units vs 14 compute units in a 460.

For example. 1x 480 does it in 14 seconds, and 2x 480's does it in around 10 seconds.

In any case, whether you go 280x or RX480. It should be plenty quicker than the 2x GTX 460's that you are currently using.

I think by your test result, in Final Cut, you have Render activated in Background. Or your processor it's working too much. In all the threads I watch and sites I follow, 480 work around 18-20 seconds. 290X /390X are actually the fastest card for FCX.

Davinci Resolve loves 980 ti or 980 over the best amd card.

Well this is how it does with the overhead of a 2560*1440 60p screen capture.

I thought about a 290x, but I would need to watercool it as I wouldn't enjoy the noise.
I modded my Red Devil Bios, so the fans don't even spin up until 75c, and then it stays pretty quiet. It probably downclocks a bit, but I prefer a silent system.

Edit:
I actually prefer colorfinale, so don't use Davinci.

My R9 290 (Windforce OC) does BruceX @ 16 seconds, with a Xeon x5650 (hex, ~4 Ghz all cores OC). The card is actually pretty quiet unless I do a benchmark or game for an extended period of time.

I'd still like to eventually upgrade to something that's less finicky for major OS updates/multimonitor support, has HDMI 2.0+, and consumes less power.

Well, this is little off topic but I tested my r9 390 card in El-cap for Brucex 5k. 5times get 8.5sec.
I am using two monitors. Even I don't use IGFX. just connected one DVI and One HDMI in R9 390. But when you boot it should DVI first then connect HDMI when I see login. Everything is fine, I am afraid to go Sierra.

8.5 seconds is something you might expect from two 390x.
Make sure you have turned off pre-render and deleted the render cache files.

A present for MORK
Cant you help fix this Card under Sierra..GV-R929XD5-4GD-B-GA
