macOS Sierra cannot be installed on "(null)"

I have tried upgrading to Sierra but get this message in the last few seconds of the install.



The SSD is a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB.

Would this be caused by this issue with the Samsung 950, as noted in the Sierra installation guide?



The system is configured as iMac 14.2

After you download Sierra, restart your computer before going through the install, and it should take care of the macOS Sierra cannot be installed on "(null)".

I have downloaded 10.12.3 Combo update and tried to install, but now get this message.
