Login as other user from locked screen? [SOLVED]

In Windows 7 (and Vista) when presented with a locked screen (someone else is logged in) you have the ability to log in as another user and leave the already logged in user's session locked in the background. Then you can switch between user sessions leaving apps open in each session (with appropriate passwords, of course)

Is there a similar mechanism for OS X?

In System Preferences | Accounts, select "Enable fast user switching"
