I bought the LG 4k monitor from apple store recently with thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter:
http://www.apple.com/hk/shop/product/HKMY2PA/A/lg-ultrafine-4k-display
http://www.apple.com/hk/shop/product/MMEL2FE/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter?fnode=85

And planning to have a custom mac later.

As the thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter description mentioned:
As a bidirectional adapter, it can also connect new Thunderbolt 3 devices to a Mac with a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port.

I thought I can use the adaptor usb-c port for that 4k monitor, and use a display port to mini display port for a custom mac for input.

However when I try to connect my Y580 hackintosh (10.11.6) on hdmi/vga, neither of them is not working at all:
LG 4K monitor (usb-c) <-> (usb-c) adapter (thunderbolt 2) <-> (thunderbolt 2) adapter (hdmi) <-> (hdmi) Y580
LG 4K monitor (usb-c) <-> (usb-c) adapter (thunderbolt 2) <-> (thunderbolt 2) adapter (vga) <-> (vga) Y580

So I am wondering whether this would work or not:
LG 4K monitor (usb-c) <-> (usb-c) adapter (thunderbolt 2) <-> (mini display port) cable (display port) <-> (display port) custom mac

Was I stupid on those usb-c stuffs??

This is not a Thunderbolt display! It (most likely) uses DisplayPort over USB-C ("Alternate Mode"), that's a completely different story.

It should work with a DP to USB-C adapter (if such a thing exists). It won't work if anything TB-related is involved, neither the display nor your computers are TB devices.
